Chester has a long history stretching back from the days of the Romans. Through excavations in the city the remains of a Roman fortress was uncovered dating back almost 2,000 years. The area has now been turned into a museum called the Dewa Roman Experience. Alderley Edge, due to its sandstone escarpment, has also been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geology.
