Mother said use mud

When we were young we would invariably wander unknowingly into a patch of stinging nettles. My Mother always had us scoop up a handful of mud and rub it on where the nettles stung us. Let it dry, then wash off. If we did not have mud close by a little saliva and dirt would work just fine.
