I have had a fireplace for years but due to the inefficient burning of my fireplace I decided to buy a wood stove. I found that I was burning way too much wood for the amount of heat that it was putting off.
I researched wood stoves and their efficiency and decided to invest in one for a couple of reasons. Firstly because I live in the country and have access to 75 acres of family owned property which gives me all the wood that I'll ever need.
Secondly, with the economy like it is and the uncertain future of this country with the regards to oil I want to be self sufficient in regards to my heating.
Also with the couple of times we've had power outages due to ice storms or other weather related issues my wood stove sure came in handy.
Thirdly, I'm wanting to live more self sufficient in all ways and this was one more way to get there. I want to get back to the "old way of living". I remember growing up on my grandparents farm and the way they lived. It was a harder life but they were just about completely self sufficient.

Thank you so much for your post, Glen. Yes, wood stoves are wonderful, not just for cooking and heating but of course you can run your boilers from them too as well as underfloor and central heating.
Using wood is the cheapest form of fuel if you have access to forests as you do.
