Appetizer Recipes and appetizers - ideas for great party
finger food and
starters!
Entertain painlessly with our quick and easy home
entertaining ideas. Appetizers are often
painful to prepare, mainly because they
only consist of mouthfuls, and there are often so many mouths to feed.
It's when you start making these hors d'oeuvres and then wonder why on
earth you invited all those people. If only you had kept the numbers
down - your work wouldn't be so difficult! Well here's the good news!
These
starters, appetizers and finger food ideas are quick and easy and will
take no time at all to throw
together.
Home Entertaining Ideas:
* The trick is not to make all those small, finicky party finger
foods, but to make trays of goodies that you can cut up into smaller
pieces - so much easier!
* Make things in advance so that you can throw them together on a plate
at the last minute, or plate them up and refrigerate until needed.
Smoked Salmon and Capers
Easy Appetizers with Fish
Easy Appetizer Recipes:
Smoked Salmon
Smoked
Salmon is such a lovely fish to use for throwing together easy
appetizers and I don't know too
many people who don't like it. It is so easy to use both as a quick and
easy dinner party first course, or as finger food. Both dishes below
are so easy, I am almost embarrassed to put them up!
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Smoked Salmon and Capers
2 slices of smoked salmon per person
1 large red onion, thinly sliced
1 lemon, cut into wedges
1/2 teaspoon of capers per person
Black pepper to taste
Put
the smoked salmon on the plates and scatter thin slithers of onion on
the plate along with the capers. Grind black pepper over the top, with
a wedge of lemon and hey presto! You have a starter!
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Smoked Salmon Roll-Ups
This is another easy
appetizer and makes ideal party finger food:
1 tub cream cheese (not cottage cheese!)
250g Smoked Salmon
Black Pepper to taste
Separate
the slices of salmon in the packet and place on a cutting board. Cut
into 1 inch strips and place a teaspoon or two of cream cheese at one
end. Starting at that end, tuck the salmon around the cream cheese and
roll to the end. Place on plate. Chill. Finish off with ground black
pepper just before serving.
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Salmon Dip
This is a great starter
recipe for those pre-dinner drinks. Buying the
cheaper
pink salmon is a better, as really red salmon is too expensive these
days, and in this dip, you wouldn't be able to taste the difference.
1 x 220 g tin salmon, drained, skin and bones removed and mashed
125 g cream cheese
25 ml thick cream
5 ml brandy
5 ml crushed onion
5 ml tomato sauce
Pinch each salt and sugar
Pour
into blender and add just enough additional thin cream or milk to
enable the blender to blend. When smooth, place into small pots,
decorate with parsley and chill for several hours before serving.
Easy Appetizers with Crab:
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Deviled Crab
Pick
the meat from one large crab and chop a little. Add 2 green peppers,
chopped fine, and mix with cracker crumbs. Add sufficient soup stock to
moisten and season to taste. Clean the shell and put in 1 layer of the
ingredients. Add pieces of butter, then another layer, and so on, till
shell is full. Then bake fifteen minutes, and serve.
Easy Appetizers with Cheese:
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Deep Fried Camembert
Take
a round of Camembert and cut the round into small wedges. Dip into
beaten egg, and seasoned bread crumbs. Repeat and place in fridge to
firm up. Heat hot sunflower oil and deep fry until golden brown. Serve
with cranberry sauce.
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Stuffed Walnuts
Mix a little lemon juice
together with some Roquefort cheese. Roll into
small balls small enough to cover a walnut half. Place on the walnut
half and replace the other half of the walnut on top.
Easy Appetizers with Vegetables:
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Asparagus with a Lemon
Mayonnaise
Put
into the blender: 1 egg, 25 ml fresh lemon juice, 10 ml brown sugar, 2
ml salt, 25 ml oil.
Blend and then pour in, in a slow, steady
stream while the blender is still running 200 ml oil.
Spoon into bowl
and add 1 clove of garlic finely chopped (optional), finely grated
lemon peel (1-2 tablespoons, or to taste.)
You can add a tablespoon of
thick cream if you wish to make it richer.
Place cooked asparagus on each plate with a dollop of lemon mayonnaise
over the top. Serve with thin wedges of homemade
brown bread.
Easy Appetizers with Eggs:
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Curried Eggs
Boil 8 eggs until hard
boiled.
Remove from pot and remove shells.
Cut
and carefully remove yolks, making sure you don't split the white
casing.
Mix with some mayonnaise, cream, parsley and curry powder to
taste. Consistency should be thin enough to place in a piping bag and
pipe mixture back into egg white casings.
Sprinkle with black caviar if
you feel extravagant!
Easy Appetizers with Meat:
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Prosciutto and Melon
Slice
up a honeydew melon (Spanspek in South Africa), and peel off the outer
rind.
Place wedges of melon on plate and drape with slices of good
prosciutto or Parma ham.
For a neater look you can take your ham or prosciutto and wrap it
tightly around the melon.
In the picture right you can see that I have used green melon. Only
because I couldn't find the honeydew, or orange melon. The taste of the
Parma ham with the orange melon is far superior to that of the green
melon.
You can ring the changes and use rip black
figs and prosciutto.
Make a cross in the top of the fig, and press the base with your
fingers to open the fig up.
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Antipasto
Antipasto
is a super-easy starter recipe! Most of the ingredients are store
bought, and all you have to do is throw all together on a plate with
some Italian crusty bread.
Buy: Black
and green marinated olives, roasted capsicums, marinated artichokes,
marinated mushrooms, slices of salami, proscuitto and bresola.
Find some mozzarella and either slice that or pull into
chunks,
or you can even buy the little round balls of mozzarella called
bocconcini.
Buy some nice crusty Italian bread and break into
hunks, or slice. Serve with a little bowl of olive oil. Enjoy!
Easy Appetizer Recipes: Easy Sausage Rolls
Buy fresh breakfast pork
sausages from your butcher. Remove the skins,
add some chopped onions and add some mixed herbs.
Flour up hands and
make small balls about 1 inch in diameter.
Roll out ready made puff
pastry. Cut up into one and a half inch strips by 2 inches. Fill with
filling. Fold over.
Brush meeting edges with beaten egg. Press a fork
along the edge to press together. Prick pastry with fork twice to
get a
crips pastry.
Brush with beaten egg. Place on baking tray and bake in a
hot oven until well puffed and golden.
