By taking country cottage holidays you will have plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits and activities within your rural location. Here you will be able to take the children to safari parks and zoos, go walking in the many hills, woods and bridle paths, and hire horses to go horse riding. While you are there, why not pop in at local Bedfordshire Farm Shops and see the local produce on offer?
In Bedfordshire, the Chiltern Hills provide excellent walking and cycling in the southern part of the county. The Icknield Way, a long distance path that runs through Luton on its way from Warden & Gallery Hills to Dunstable is for those of you who want to walk and stretch those legs.
You can also explore Aspley Wood, one of the largest remaining stretches of woodland in this area. Miles of paths criss-cross again and again for walking and horse riding, as well as spectacular views over Woburn Abbey and Milton Keynes.
Another area of outstanding beauty in Bedfordshire is that of The Downs. It is part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are excellent views over the Vale of Aylesbury and it is always a popular area for kite and glider flying. There is also an information booth on site where you can also buy another kite if yours flies off unexpectedly.
A farm holiday to this county will also take you to Woburn. This is home to the popular Woburn Safari Park that the children will love, and not forgetting the Whipsnade Zoo in Dunstable. It houses over 2500 wild animals in 600 acres of parkland. You can drive your car through the park, or take one of the regular shuttle buses. The Woburn estate is not only home to Woburn Safari Park but also to Woburn Abbey, the home of the Russell family, the Dukes of Bedford for over 450 years. The Abbey and Safari Park are open to the public.
Bedfordshire is also known for its connection to John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim's Progress, who was born near here in 1628. Several museums in the area honor Bunyan's life.
